SIHF Healthcare Reminds Women to Focus on Their Health During National Women’s Health Day and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

September 26, 2017

With National Women's Health Day on Sept. 28, and September being Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, SIHF Healthcare wants to remind women of the importance of staying on top of their health with wellness visits and annual visits to the gynecologist.

Women are often the caregivers of others in the home and neglect their own health to stay on top of everything else. With school back in session, now is the time for women to focus on their own physical and mental health. Here are a few simple steps to be the healthiest woman possible:

1)   Schedule Your Yearly Checkup:

Consistently scheduling your annual visit to your healthcare provider is vital to ensure a long and healthy life. This visit is the opportunity to discuss with your provider your family history and personal habits, set health goals, and schedule necessary tests and screenings for disease prevention and detection. Understanding your health helps your physician provide a personalized plan to follow for optimized health.

2)  Visit Your Gynecologist:

Women’s health, when it comes to gynecological visits, is often forgotten as “more important” affairs take precedent. However, these yearly visits are critical to the detection and prevention of many health issues, including ovarian cancer. At this visit, a gynecologist will spend time with you one-on-one to discuss any concerns you may have while offering a complete screening for the detection of various gynecological health concerns.

3)   Schedule Your Mammogram:

Doctors recommend women 40 and older get mammograms every couple of years. Mammograms help detect breast cancer by showing any breast lumps or microcalcifications, often before they can be felt manually. The sooner breast cancer is detected, the better the prognosis, so schedule a visit today.

4)   Pay Attention to Your Mental Health:

Mental health is a crucial element of a person’s wellbeing, and often it is the first to be overlooked. If you are feeling overwhelmed, out of sorts, or suspect you aren’t functioning at your highest level, consult a behavioral health provider for treatment.

SIHF Healthcare has more than 30 health centers across 11 counties throughout Southern Illinois and provides many services to women, including women’s overall health, OB/GYN and behavioral health services.
