Not Real Fond of Visiting the Dentist? We’ll Help You Face Your Fears!

October 4, 2017

It’s National Dental Hygiene Month, which means it’s time to *cue Jaws theme song* visit the dentist! Dental visits may not be nearly as frightening as battling a great white shark, but that doesn’t stop children and adults alike from being terrified of that brightly-lit reclining chair. Surveys estimate that dental phobia/anxiety affects 13% to 24% of people around the world. Whether you fall into this category, or just have a slight uneasiness about visiting the dentist, these tips can help make your visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

1). Do Your Research

It may soothe your mind if you know more about your dentist. At SIHF Healthcare, our expert dental team works with the latest technology and state-of-the-art equipment to minimize pain and maximize comfort. We believe it is important to educate patients about oral care, so they can continue to take good care of their teeth at home. Our professionals take time during every visit to educate you on preventative care methods and proper oral hygiene practices.

2). Have an Open Conversation with Your Dentist

Dental anxiety is largely due to fear of the unknown. Patients don’t know what to expect from a dental visit, such as: What is the dentist is going to do? What they are thinking? Will it will hurt? etc. Having a discussion with your dentist will not only alert them to your anxiety, but prompts them to explain what they are doing as they are doing it, and why. Our dental professionals at SIHF Healthcare want to make sure your visit is as comfortable, quick, and painless as possible. Help us understand your concerns by being as open and upfront as possible.

3). Try Relaxation Techniques

Your dental visit shouldn’t be a long affair, but in the time leading up to your visit, do your best to relax. Breathing exercises are a great way to calm your mind and body. Try“square breathing”: breathe in slowly for 3 counts, hold for 3 counts, breath out slowly for 3 counts, hold for 3 counts, and repeat. Remember to breath slow and deep rather than short and fast, as this can cause you to tense up and hyperventilate. During your appointment, try listening to music to take your mind off the visit.

Our dental team at SIHF Healthcare is dedicated to providing expert oral healthcare. We offer a wide range of services, including: general assessments, cleanings, fluoride treatments, restorative care, extractions, sedation, sealants, and special needs dentistry. Please note that our healthcare centers only provide dental services to patients under 21 years old. However, we do accept Medicaid and AllKids, which allows our health centers to treat children who are sometimes denied the dental care they need.
