SIHF Healthcare Offers Suggestions for Lowering Cholesterol

January 7, 2019

SIHF Healthcare is offering suggestions to the public for lowering their cholesterol. This comes as many individuals have new year’s resolutions to improve their diet and overall health.

“Many individuals are not aware of the dangers behind high cholesterol; it can greatly increase your risk of heart disease and heart attacks,” says Christa Metzelaars, FNP-C at SIHF Healthcare, 700 Broadway Avenue East in Mattoon. “Medications can help lower cholesterol levels, but they can’t do the job alone. Lifestyle changes can greatly improve their effects, naturally.”

Eliminate foods loaded with saturated fats found primarily in red meat and full-fat dairy products. Stay away from trans fats, often listed as “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” on nutrition labels. This is typically found in margarine, store-bought cookies, crackers, etc.

Focus on adding foods to your diet that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, walnuts and flaxseeds. Foods with soluble fiber, like oatmeal, Brussel sprouts, apples and pears, reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

“Moderate exercise is a must,” Metzelaars added. “It will help increase the good cholesterol your body needs. With your doctor’s approval, add some hearty activity to schedule such as a brisk walk or a daily bike ride.”
